Raj Bhavan Assam celebrates West Bengal Statehood Day
Guwahati, June 20: Raj Bhavan Assam celebrated West Bengal Statehood Day commemorating the formation of the state on June 20, 1947 showcasing the spirit of socio-cultural unity of the nation at GMCH auditorium here today.
The day was celebrated unde the leadership of Governor Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya under Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat initiative.
Speaking at the event, Assam Governor Shri Acharya extended his warm greetings to the people on the occasion. He termed the state as a confluence of intellect, reform, and nationalism. “West Bengal is not just a geographical entity; it is a living repository of India’s reformist movements, renaissance spirit and freedom struggle,” the Governor remarked.
He reflected on West Bengal’s deep commitment to education, culture, and inclusive progress. Mentioning the legacy of reformers like Raja Ram Mohan Roy and pioneers like Jagadish Chandra Bose, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, the Governor said that Bengal’s contributions strengthened the foundation for a progressive India rooted in knowledge and equity.
The Governor also recalled the historic literary-cultural awakening driven by Bengal’s thinkers, poets, and philosophers. “Rabindra Sangeet, Bankim’s prose, Sarat Chandra’s novel, and Vivekananda’s call to serve humanity still echo in the heart of every Indian,” he stated.
He emphasised that Assam and Bengal share a cultural bridge built on centuries of shared heritage and mutual respect. He cited examples of historical exchanges, linguistic proximity and cultural affinities between the people of both states. Paying deep tributes to Srimanta Sankardeva, Lakshminath Bezbaruah, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, Shri attributed the strong Assam and Bengal inherent bond to their contribution. Shri Acharya said that celebrating the Statehood Day of West Bengal in Assam reflects the spirit of national unity. “It is an occasion to honour the essence of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat – a nation enriched by its diverse regions and identities,” he added.
The Governor on the occasion called upon the youth to study the lives of great personalities of Assam and West Bengal to strengthen unity and contribute to take forward the shared legacy of the two states to expedite the emergence of Viksit Bharat.
The event was attended by First Lady Assam Smt. Kumud Devi, DG, Home Guards and CG, Civil Defence, M.P Gupta, Vice Chancellor Rabindranath Tagore University Prof. Manabendra Dutta Choudhury, Joint Secretary to the Governor Bidit Das, former Vice Chancellor of Rabindranath Tagore University Prof.Amalendu Chakraborty, Editor, Dainik Jugasankha Bikash Sarkar, veteran singer Manisha Hazarika along with a host of other dignitaries.
