Lakhimpur, June 18: On behalf of the Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh (BGP), the national social organization of Gorkhas in India, the Lakhimpur District Committee, led by its President Gobin Biswakarma, along with Life Members from the region, paid heartfelt tribute to Late Sanjay Raj Subba at his residence in Lakhimpur today and attended his funeral rites.

As a mark of deep respect, Gobin Biswakarma laid a floral wreath over the mortal remains of the departed leader and solemnly draped the Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh flag beside him, honouring his enduring contribution to the Gorkha community. A veteran Congress leader, two-time MLA from Naoboicha, and a highly regarded socio-political figure among Assam’s Gorkhas, Subba was himself a Member of Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh, along with his elder brother, Late Moni Kumar Subba, former three-term Member of Parliament from Tezpur and one of the founder patrons of the Parisangh.

His untimely demise has drawn widespread condolences from across the political spectrum. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President and Deputy Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, expressed profound grief, remembering Subba as a grassroots leader who stood firmly for inclusive politics and community empowerment. Chief Minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, also paid tribute, acknowledging his contributions to public life and extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

Several of Subba’s party colleagues, as well as current and former Members of the Assam Legislative Assembly, took to social media to share their messages of condolence. They remembered him as a humble, accessible leader—a true people’s representative, deeply connected to the aspirations of marginalized communities, particularly the Gorkhas of Assam. His legacy, they affirmed, would live on through his service-driven politics and lifelong commitment to his constituents.

The Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh joins the entire Gorkha community and the people of Assam in mourning his passing and stands in solidarity with the grieving family during this hour of profound loss.

Sanjay Raj Subba, a senior Congress leader, former two-time MLA from Naoboicha, and respected figure in Gorkha civil society, passed away on Tuesday at Laluk Model Hospital in Assam’s Lakhimpur district following complications related to hypertension. He was the younger brother of the late Moni Kumar Subba, a three-time Member of Parliament from Tezpur. Renowned for his grassroots connection and people-centric leadership, Subba played a pivotal role in strengthening the Congress Party’s presence in the region.

The news of his untimely demise has deeply saddened political circles and the wider Gorkha community across Assam and beyond. Amar Adhikari, State President of the Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh, conveyed his condolences on behalf of Gorkhas across India. Prem Tamang, Chairman of the Gorkha Development Council (GDC), Government of Assam, along with several other community leaders, also mourned the loss of a dedicated public servant and guardian of the community.

The Limboo Mahasabha, Assam—the leading socio-cultural organization of the indigenous Yakthung Limbu tribe to which Subba belonged—also expressed profound grief. In a heartfelt message, Mahasabha President Lakhi Khapung Limboo said, “The living political identity of the Subba family, Sanjay Raj Subba, has departed for the heavenly abode today. As per our traditions, I pray our ancestors welcome him in the other world.” He further described the loss as not just a personal tragedy for the family but a collective bereavement for the entire Gorkha community of Assam.
