Congress–Now Merely a Party of Bengali-Origin Muslims:BJP
The Congress party today represents only the Bengali-origin Muslim population, said senior BJP leader Dr. Syed Muminul Aowal in a statement. Out of the 15 Muslim MLAs in the Congress, 14 are of Bengali origin, he asserted. Aowal claimed that Congress has ceased to be a pan- Indian party and has transformed into a Muslim League-style political entity. He further emphasized that the core strength and ideological direction of the Congress has always stemmed from Bengali-origin Muslims, who continue to dominate and influence the party’s functioning .
Since India’s independence, the Congress party has consistently advocated for illegal Muslim migrants, he said , facilitating their settlement in Assam while encouraging infiltration. He accused the party of holding pro-Pakistan and pro-Bangladesh sentiments, claiming that even after the victory in the 1971 war, the Congress Prime Minister at the time failed to take decisive steps in India’s national interest due to a soft corner for Muslim appeasement , particularly regarding the strategic “ Chicken’s Neck” corridor.
Aowal pointed out that the recent appointment of Gaurav Gogoi as Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President reflects the influence of this same power bloc. He claimed that following political changes in Bangladesh, the elevation of Gaurav Gogoi triggered celebration among the people of Bangladesh, Bangladeshi migrants, and Bengali-origin Muslims residing in Assam — a development worth noting, he said .
Another notable aspect, according to Aowal, was that nearly all Muslim Congress MLAs aligned themselves with AIUDF leader Rakibul Hussain in Delhi to remove former APCC President Bhupen Bora. Eventually, under the patronage of the same Rakibul Hussain , whom he referred to as the mastermind of the
” Mastermind of the Rhino Killing” Gaurav Gogoi was made President of Assam Congress. The excitement this has generated among the Congress’s Muslim League-style base is natural, Aowal remarked, adding that Gogoi, instead of seeking blessings, has now begun asking for “duas” (prayers) — revealing the ideological shift within the party .
